(Web Desk): Rawalpindi electric buses network is expanding as 35 more buses will begin service on new city routes within a month.

The Punjab Mass Transit Authority has announced that more than 35 additional electric buses will soon start operating on new electric bus routes in Rawalpindi. Officials said the move will improve travel facilities for thousands of daily passengers across the city.

At present, 45 electric buses are operating on seven routes in the garrison city. Authorities plan to increase the number of buses to 80 within one month to meet growing public demand.

More electric bus routes in Rawalpindi

Officials said over 10 routes had originally been planned for the electric bus project. However, only seven routes were launched because of ongoing construction work at Kutchery Chowk.

After the construction work is completed, passengers will be able to travel easily from Rawat T-Chowk to District Courts. New routes will also connect Koral Chowk with Soan Bridge, the Motorway, Rawalpindi Railway Station and Saddar.

Raja Bazaar and downtown

Authorities said the new electric bus routes will help people coming from surrounding areas reach Raja Bazaar and downtown Rawalpindi without facing major traffic problems. The project is expected to reduce travel time for office workers, students and shoppers.

Officials added that the road from Koral Chowk and Rawat T-Chowk to the Motorway will remain signal-free. They said electric buses will provide safer, smoother and more secure travelling facilities for residents.

Phase-II project areas

A senior district administration official said, “Punjab government will launch Phase-II of electric buses to connect District Courts with other parts of the garrison city, and in this regard, the bus stops will be constructed at six sites.”

According to officials, bus bays are being developed at:

1.     Fatima Jinnah Women University,

2.     District Courts main gate,

3.     Marqa-i-Haq Monument,

4.     Police Monument on Old Airport Road,

5.     State Bank of Pakistan on The Mall and

6.     Gymkhana on Rashid Minhas Road.

Officials said some development work is still in progress around the project areas. This includes work on the Annexe Chowk underpass, drainage system, lighting arrangements, footpaths and service roads.
