Punjab to announce electric bus service in major districts
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major expansion of the province’s Green Electric Bus initiative, revealing plans to introduce thousands of additional electric buses to strengthen public transport and promote environmentally friendly travel.
Speaking at a launch ceremony in Lahore, the chief minister said the Green Electric Bus service has now been extended to five more districts, including Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara, Murree and Layyah. The expansion is aimed at improving mobility, reducing travel costs and providing modern transportation facilities to residents across Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz stated that approximately 1,100 electric buses are expected to be operational across various cities by August 15. She added that 1,500 new electric buses will arrive later this year, significantly increasing the size of the provincial fleet.
According to the chief minister, the Punjab government plans to expand the electric bus fleet to 3,000 vehicles within the next three years. The longer-term target is to reach 5,000 electric buses within five years, making it one of the largest clean public transport projects in the country.
Officials say the initiative is designed to reduce air pollution, lower fuel consumption and provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers. Electric buses are also expected to help decrease carbon emissions and support Pakistan’s broader environmental goals.
The expansion comes as Punjab continues to invest in modern transport infrastructure and smart mobility solutions. Authorities believe the growing electric bus network will improve connectivity between urban centers and smaller districts while offering commuters a cleaner and more reliable alternative to traditional transport options.
