Pakistan launches Rs900 million expansion of Skardu Airport
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) said the project will modernise the airport by expanding the terminal building, increasing passenger capacity and upgrading facilities to meet the growing demand for air travel. Under the project, the terminal building will be expanded from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet, allowing the airport to accommodate more passengers comfortably.
The departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 to 900 passengers, while the arrival lounge will be expanded from 80 to 200 passengers to improve passenger flow. The number of check-in counters will increase from six to 10, helping reduce waiting times during peak travel periods and making the check-in process more efficient.
The airport’s parking capacity will also triple, increasing from 200 to 600 vehicles to accommodate the growing number of visitors. The project also includes the construction of a modern cargo office block, which is expected to improve cargo handling and support trade and commercial activities in the region.

According to the PAA, the upgraded airport is expected to attract more domestic and international flights, making Skardu more accessible to tourists and further strengthening Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism sector.
PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said construction is currently in its initial phase, with line-marking work already underway ahead of major development activities.
The authority believes the expansion project will enhance the passenger experience, support the local economy and help meet the increasing demand for air travel to one of Pakistan’s most popular tourist destinations.
