Mohsin Naqvi leaves for Iran to discuss bilateral ties, regional issues
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has travelled to Tehran for meetings with senior Iranian officials as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement with its neighbouring country.
The visit is focused mainly on bilateral relations and follow-up on understandings reached between Pakistan and Iran at the leadership level.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit was “entirely within the framework of bilateral discussions”. He also said Iran’s relations with Pakistan had improved in recent months.
Naqvi is expected to discuss matters of mutual interest with Iranian officials during his meetings. The visit comes at a time when developments in the region have increased the importance of diplomatic contacts between neighbouring countries.
Iran clarifies purpose of Naqvi’s visit
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has described Naqvi’s visit as a bilateral engagement. Baghaei said the discussions would focus on relations between Pakistan and Iran and the implementation of previous understandings between the two countries.
His comments came after reports that Naqvi could potentially carry a message or proposal from the United States. Baghaei said he had no information indicating that Naqvi would deliver any specific US message or proposal during the visit.
He also noted that Pakistan, because of its regional role, could use diplomatic opportunities to discuss wider developments. However, Iran has publicly described Naqvi’s current visit as focused on bilateral matters.
Pakistan and Iran strengthen diplomatic contacts
Pakistan and Iran have maintained regular high-level contacts in recent months.
Both countries have discussed security, trade, border issues and regional developments during their engagements. The latest visit is another effort to maintain communication between Islamabad and Tehran.
Officials from both sides have also stressed the importance of improving relations between the neighbouring countries. Baghaei said Tehran’s relations with Islamabad had been “very good and growing”, according to reports from Iranian state media.
Regional tensions add importance to visit
Naqvi’s visit comes amid wider tensions across the region. Pakistan has remained involved in diplomatic efforts concerning developments involving Iran and the United States.
The country has previously used its contacts with both sides to encourage dialogue and support efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
The latest Tehran visit therefore comes against a wider diplomatic backdrop, although Iran has stressed that Naqvi’s current trip is focused on bilateral discussions.
Naqvi previously visited Tehran
This is not Naqvi’s first recent visit to Iran. In August, he travelled to Tehran alongside the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

During that visit, Pakistani officials held talks with Iranian leaders on regional developments and efforts to prevent further escalation.
Pakistan later said that significant progress had been made during the discussions on the regional conflict and possible ways to reduce tensions. Reuters reported that the talks also covered efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and seek a negotiated settlement.
The August visit highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to remain engaged in regional diplomacy.
Focus remains on bilateral relations
The latest visit is expected to provide an opportunity for Pakistan and Iran to review their existing agreements and understandings.
Both sides have a long-standing relationship based on geographical proximity, cultural links, and economic interests. Improving bilateral cooperation remains important for both countries.

Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy

Iranian officials have acknowledged Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy but have not indicated that Naqvi’s latest visit involves a specific US proposal.
