Trump praises PM Shehbaz at UNGA
United States President Donald Trump gave a special mention to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Trump referred to the Pakistani premier as a “terrific man” while speaking about efforts to reduce tensions in different parts of the world.
During his speech, Trump said his administration had helped settle several conflicts since taking office. He mentioned Pakistan and India among the countries where he claimed diplomatic efforts contributed to easing tensions.
Pakistan-India conflict mentioned again
Trump said he had developed strong relations with leaders from different countries and used diplomacy in conflict resolution. He also stated that several leaders had sent letters expressing appreciation for these efforts.
Referring to Pakistan, Trump said: “The prime minister of Pakistan — terrific man — said that Donald Trump was responsible for saving 30 million lives and probably many more than that.” Trump has previously made similar remarks regarding the Pakistan-India military tensions of May 2025.
Background of regional tensions
Tensions between Pakistan and India increased after an attack in occupied Kashmir in April 2025. India blamed Pakistan for the incident, while Islamabad rejected the allegations and denied any involvement.
The two countries later witnessed military escalation before a ceasefire was announced in May 2025. Since then, Trump has repeatedly spoken about his claimed role in supporting diplomatic efforts that led to the ceasefire.
Trump discusses Iran and ICC
Trump also used his UNGA speech to discuss Iran, saying he believed a future agreement could still be reached. Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons.
The US president also criticised the International Criminal Court (ICC) and called on member countries to reconsider their participation in the institution. The ICC has previously issued arrest warrants related to international conflicts, a move opposed by Washington.
Trump’s remarks kept Pakistan in focus during an important global forum. The comments also showed how regional diplomacy and international conflicts remain part of wider discussions at the United Nations.
