LESCO smart meters replacement starts across Punjab
The project has been launched under the directions of the Ministry of Energy. In the first phase, 1,000 smart meters will be installed by August.
According to a LESCO spokesperson, a total of 8,342 single-phase non-AMI meters in Punjab government institutions across the LESCO region will be replaced with modern AMI smart meters. The replacement is part of a broader effort to modernize the electricity system.
The spokesperson said AMI smart meters will make electricity reading, billing, and monitoring more transparent and effective. The new technology will also help reduce manual intervention and improve the accuracy of power data.
Among all operational circles, Okara Circle has the highest number of non-AMI meters in Punjab government institutions. A total of 1,811 old meters in the circle are scheduled for replacement under the project.
LESCO has directed all circles to ensure the immediate allocation of AMI smart meters. Officials have also been instructed to complete installations on a priority basis to speed up the transition.

The spokesperson added that the installation of AMI smart meters will promote digitalization and transparency in the electricity sector. The initiative is expected to support better energy management and strengthen monitoring mechanisms in government offices.
The development comes as Pakistan’s power sector continues to adopt modern technologies. Authorities believe smart metering can play a key role in improving operational efficiency and reducing system losses.
The project shows that power companies are moving toward digital systems. If implemented successfully, smart meters could improve billing accuracy, strengthen monitoring, and make electricity management more transparent for government institutions.
