Pakistan pushes for commitment to Islamabad MoU as US-Iran tensions rise
Pakistan made the appeal during a United Nations Security Council briefing, where its representative stressed that dialogue remains the only way to resolve the Iran nuclear issue and restore regional stability.
Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the recent escalation is not in anyone’s interest. Speaking on behalf of Pakistan UN, he called on all parties to show restraint and avoid actions that could increase instability.
He said the Pakistan Islamabad MoU provides an important framework for peaceful negotiations and should continue to guide diplomatic efforts.
According to Pakistan UN, abandoning the Islamabad MoU at this stage would make resolving the Iran nuclear issue even more difficult.
The statement comes as fresh US Iran tensions have emerged following disagreements over last month’s ceasefire.
Although US President Donald Trump said Washington had agreed to continue talks with Tehran, he also claimed that the previous ceasefire was no longer in effect.
Pakistan stressed that all sides should return to the negotiating table instead of allowing US Iran tensions to grow further. Officials said continued diplomacy is the only practical solution for the Iran nuclear issue and broader regional security.
Ambassador Ahmad described the Islamabad MoU as a practical roadmap that encourages dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful settlement of disputes.
He said every commitment made under the Pakistan Islamabad MoU should be respected to avoid further complications.
