(Web Desk): Karnataka minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has expressed his desire to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in his lifetime.

He shared the wish while speaking at a Muslim community mass marriage programme in Kuknoor, Koppal.

Rayareddy said he does not regularly visit temples or monasteries, but hopes to travel to Makkah for Hajj. His comments quickly attracted attention and led to a political debate in Karnataka.

Praise for Islam and the Quran

The minister also spoke positively about Islam and highlighted what he described as its humanitarian and scientific values. He said the Quran can be read by anyone and encouraged people to learn good principles from different religions.

Rayareddy urged people not to become religious fanatics or casteists. He said people should focus on the positive teachings of different faiths instead of creating divisions.

BJP leaders question remarks

His comments triggered criticism from BJP leaders, who demanded an apology from the minister. They also questioned his remarks concerning Hindu religious institutions.

The controversy grew as political leaders debated whether his comments were appropriate. The issue also brought renewed attention to discussions about religion and politics in Karnataka.

Minister later clarifies his position

Rayareddy later clarified that he never intended to suggest that one religion was better or worse than another. He said all religions are great and stressed that no religion is bad.

The clarification appeared aimed at reducing the controversy surrounding his earlier remarks. His comments, however, continued to attract political attention and public discussion.

The controversy mainly appears to have developed because of Rayareddy’s comments about religious institutions and his personal wish to perform Hajj. His later clarification shows that he wanted to make clear that he respects all religions.

The incident also highlights how comments about religion can quickly become politically sensitive. Rayareddy’s statement has therefore become a wider debate about religious respect, tolerance and political communication.
