WhatsApp to roll up update for searching old messages easily
A simpler way to search chats
Finding a particular message in an WhatsApp old conversation can be frustrating, especially when a chat contains months or even years of messages.
WhatsApp is now making that process easier with a WhatsApp search shortcut that lets users access search directly from inside a conversation.
The feature is being rolled out to some iPhone users through WhatsApp Messenger for iOS version 26.36.74. The rollout is gradual, so it may not be available on every device immediately.
The WhatsApp new update removes some of the extra steps previously required to search for a message.
What has changed?
Previously, users had to open a conversation, tap the contact or group name and enter the chat information screen. They could then select the search option before looking for a specific word or phrase.
With the WhatsApp search shortcut, users can start searching without leaving the conversation.
The button appears near the top of the screen when users scroll upward through a chat. After tapping it, users can enter a keyword and find matching messages using the existing search system.
This means searching for WhatsApp old messages should require fewer steps than before.

The button only appears when needed
The new shortcut does not stay visible all the time.
When users scroll through older parts of a conversation, the search button appears near the top. When they return to the latest messages, it disappears again.
The design was different during the earlier testing phase. WhatsApp had initially placed the button at the bottom of the screen before moving it to the top for the rollout.
The WhatsApp iOS update therefore focuses on making an existing function easier to reach rather than introducing a completely new search system.
WhatsApp Channels also get the shortcut
The change is not limited to individual chats.
The shortcut also works in group conversations and WhatsApp Channels. Users browsing a frequently updated channel can search for older posts without first opening the channel information page.
This could be particularly useful for channels that publish many updates, as finding an older post manually can take considerable time.
The WhatsApp chat search process is also expected to become more convenient because users can begin a search while already browsing through older messages.
When will everyone get it?
The WhatsApp search feature is currently being rolled out gradually. Some iPhone users can access it after installing the compatible version, while others may have to wait.

WhatsApp has not announced a specific date for when the shortcut will reach every iOS user. The rollout is expected to continue over the coming weeks.
