Why PTA Taxes Have Changed
Earlier this month, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), through its Directorate General of Customs Valuation, increased the customs valuation of 62 old and used mobile phone models.
Premium devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max were also included in the revised valuation list, leading to higher applicable taxes.
How PTA Mobile Registration Tax Is Calculated
It is important to note that the PTA itself does not determine mobile phone taxes. Instead, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) calculates duties based on the device’s import value in US dollars.
These valuations are then used to determine the final PTA tax payable during device registration.
Impact on Pakistani Consumers
The revised PTA tax rates are expected to affect consumers planning to import or purchase iPhone 14 series devices from abroad. Higher taxes may:
- Increase overall cost of ownership
- Influence buying decisions
- Shift demand toward locally available or PTA-approved devices
Despite the increase, demand for premium smartphones remains strong in Pakistan, particularly for Apple devices.
PTA Registration Mandatory for Smartphone Use
All imported mobile phones must be registered with PTA to function on Pakistani SIM networks. Failure to register devices can result in network blocking.
Users are advised to check the latest PTA tax rates before purchasing or importing smartphones to avoid unexpected costs.
