(Web Desk): The government is preparing a plan to help people buy 5G smartphones on easy installments before the launch of 5G services.

Under the government’s 5G smartphones on easy installments plan, authorities have prepared a mobile phone leasing policy to make 5G devices affordable for citizens.

The federal government has finalized the initial draft of the policy. The policy is part of preparations for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction and the expansion of digital services across the country.

Officials say the main purpose of the plan is to make 5G smartphones accessible to a larger number of people. Many citizens cannot afford to pay the full price of modern phones at once, so the installment system is expected to reduce the financial burden.

Affordable price range for 5G phones

During a briefing, Hafeez Ur Rehman, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, said entry-level 5G smartphones are expected to remain affordable.

He explained that the price of basic 5G devices may range between Rs40,000 and Rs45,000. Officials believe such pricing will help more users adopt 5G technology once the services become available.

Leasing policy to support digital growth

Zarrar Hasham Khan said the policy is being prepared by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication in consultation with telecom operators, banks and other stakeholders.

According to officials, the leasing policy will allow citizens to buy smartphones through monthly payments instead of paying the entire amount upfront. This will make it easier for people to access high-speed internet and digital services.

Authorities also shared the initial draft with industry representatives for feedback so that any issues can be resolved before the final approval.

Local manufacturing already strong

During the briefing, Shaza Fatima Khawaja said most mobile phones used in Pakistan are produced locally.

She explained that about 95% of mobile phones in the country are manufactured domestically, while only around three percent of users depend on expensive imported devices.

Officials say local production is helping keep smartphone prices relatively lower and supporting the expansion of the mobile industry.

Clarification about mobile phone taxes

The PTA chairman also addressed confusion regarding taxes on mobile phones. He clarified that taxes on handset imports are collected by the Federal Board of Revenue.

He added that the telecom regulator does not decide tax rates for individual phone models.

5G phones already being produced

Officials also revealed that around 35 companies are currently manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan. At least five of these companies have already started producing devices that are compatible with 5G technology.

Authorities said the government will ensure that 5G smartphones are available in the market before the official launch of 5G services so that people can start using the technology immediately.

The leasing plan could help many people switch to 5G smartphones without paying a large amount at once. Easy installments may increase smartphone ownership and internet use. If implemented properly, the plan could speed up Pakistan’s move toward a digital economy.
