Pakistan is moving further toward launching next-generation mobile services as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority prepares to conduct the second phase of the 5G spectrum auction tomorrow.
The upcoming stage will determine the exact placement of frequency bands already acquired by telecom companies during the first phase of the auction.
According to officials, the second phase will be an assignment-based auction covering the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands.
Telecom operators will bid for the top, middle, or lower positions within these frequency ranges, which will decide how their allocated spectrum blocks are positioned.
If the participating telecom operators reach a mutual agreement on the positioning of their spectrum bands, the regulator will finalize the allocation without bidding.
However, if no agreement is reached, the companies will compete through a bidding process to secure their preferred positions.

The regulator has set the initial positioning fee at $100,000, which could rise to $1 million if the process proceeds to additional bidding rounds.
Earlier, the first phase of Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction successfully sold around 480 MHz of spectrum, generating nearly $507 million in revenue for the government.
