(Web Desk): Former Manchester United star Zidane Iqbal is set to make history as Iraq star, bringing rare World Cup pride to Pakistan football fans.

The former Manchester United midfielder is set for a landmark moment at the men’s World Cup.

Iqbal will represent Iraq, but his achievement carries deep meaning for Pakistan. The country of over 240 million people has never reached a World Cup.

Pakistan’s football history has been poor at the international level. The team has won only one qualifying match and sits near the bottom of global rankings.

Iqbal, who plays for Utrecht and came through Manchester United’s academy, is expected to become the first player of Pakistani heritage at a men’s World Cup. The moment is being widely followed by fans across Pakistan and the diaspora.

The 23-year-old midfielder was born in Manchester to a Pakistani father and an Iraqi mother. He says he is proud of both sides of his family background.

He told BBC Sport, “To be honest, I didn’t even know it myself,” after learning about the historic recognition. He added that his father’s support played a major role in his career.

Iqbal also said, “My dad is Pakistani. He’s my father, the man I respect the most in my life, who helped me so much in my career.” He explained that he values both identities equally.

He further said, “I wear the Iraqi flag on my left side and the Pakistani flag on my right side,” showing pride in both nations. He added that respect for both sides of his family is important to him.

Iqbal hopes his journey will inspire young players. He said football is difficult, but hard work and belief can make success possible from any background.

He also said, “Hopefully I inspire kids of any background,” encouraging young footballers to dream big. He believes representation can change how young players see their future.

Football analyst Ahmed Shahzad said Iqbal has become a symbol of hope for Pakistani fans. He added that many now see Iraq as a team they can emotionally support.

Iraq qualified for the World Cup after a tough 21-match campaign. It is their first appearance in 40 years since Mexico 1986.

Iqbal believes Iraq can surprise stronger teams at the tournament. He said, “If we lose, people expect us to lose. If we win, we shock the world.”

He added that the team will play without pressure as underdogs. He believes excitement and hard work can create unexpected results.

This story shows how one player can connect two nations through football. Zidane Iqbal’s background has created unexpected excitement for Pakistan fans.

It also highlights Pakistan’s long struggle in international football. His success is now seen as a symbol of hope for young players from the region.
