Iran draw 2-2 with New Zealand in tense World Cup clash in LA
Iran came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in an exciting World Cup Group G match at Los Angeles Stadium. The game was played in a highly charged atmosphere, with political protests outside the stadium and strong emotions inside the stands.
New Zealand started strongly and took an early lead when Elijah Just finished a well-placed pass from Chris Wood, sending the ball into the net with a sharp volley inside the box.
The goal triggered mixed reactions in the stadium. Some fans critical of the Iranian government showed support for the opposition movement, while others even booed Iran’s national anthem before kickoff. However, the majority of the crowd of more than 70,000 fans backed Iran loudly throughout the match.
Iran responded strongly when Ramin Rezaeian equalised just after the half-hour mark, reacting quickly to a rebound and finishing calmly past the goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1. New Zealand regained the lead early in the second half as Chris Wood once again created the chance, setting up Elijah Just for his second goal of the match, putting the All Whites ahead 2-1.

However, Iran refused to give up and struck back 10 minutes later. Mohammad Mohebbi scored a brilliant header from Rezaeian’s cross, sending the ball into the far corner to make it 2-2. Both teams pushed hard for a winner in the final minutes, but neither side could break the deadlock as the match ended in a dramatic draw under the California sunset.
The result leaves Group G wide open, with all teams sitting on one point after Belgium and Egypt also shared a draw earlier in the day. New Zealand remains without a World Cup win in their history, while Iran are still chasing their first-ever qualification for the knockout stage. Iran will next face Belgium in Los Angeles, while New Zealand will take on Egypt in Vancouver.
Outside the stadium, around 300 to 500 protesters gathered, holding flags and banners against the Iranian government. The Iranian-American community remained divided, with some supporting the team and others distancing themselves from political symbolism. The match highlighted not only sporting intensity but also deep political and emotional divisions among fans, making it one of the most talked-about fixtures of the tournament so far.
