(Web Desk): Robert Martin’s journey from atheism to Islam developed gradually after years of working closely with Muslims especially in Palestine.

The Australian journalist and pro-Palestine activist said his experiences changed how he understood faith.

Martin has spent around 15 years around Muslims and gradually became interested in Islam. He had also read the Quran about a decade earlier and said its message and meaning made a strong impression on him.

A journey shaped by Palestine

Martin’s connection with Islam was also influenced by his experiences in Palestine. He first visited Palestine in 2014 and said the warm welcome from Palestinians changed his understanding of the people and their faith.

He became known for supporting Palestinian rights and speaking about the Palestinian struggle. His work also brought him into close contact with Muslim communities and their traditions.

From atheism to a new faith

Martin had previously described himself as an atheist or agnostic and said he was raised Christian. According to his account, his views changed gradually through his experiences, reading the Quran and learning more about Islam.

His journey was not based on one particular event. Spending time with Muslims, visiting Palestine and reflecting on the Quran all contributed to his changing understanding of faith.

Martin confirms his decision

In December 2025, Martin publicly confirmed that he had decided to embrace Islam. He said he was “very much at peace with my decision” while speaking about the major change in his life.

He later discussed his journey in an interview with Dr. Omar Suleiman. The conversation explored his introduction to Islam, his experiences in Palestine and the personal factors behind his decision.

Palestine and changing views

Martin recalled his earliest visits to the Holy Land and the hospitality he experienced there. Those encounters encouraged him to learn more about Palestinians, their culture and their religious beliefs.

His later involvement with the Freedom Flotilla also became part of his continuing work connected to Palestine. These experiences gave him further opportunities to meet Muslims and reflect on his own beliefs.

Reflections on the Quran

The Quran became an important part of Martin’s journey toward Islam. He said he had first read it years earlier and that its message continued to influence his thinking.

His reflections also focused on faith and personal identity. The discussion showed how his understanding developed over many years rather than changing suddenly.

Personal journey and mental health

The interview also explored Martin’s personal journey and reflections on mental health. He discussed how his experiences affected his thinking and understanding of himself.

His story included questions about identity and belonging. These subjects became part of his wider reflection on religion, society and his decision to embrace Islam.

Confronting Islamophobia

Martin has also spoken about Islamophobia and the importance of solidarity between communities. His long association with Muslims gave him direct experience of their lives and religious practices.

His story highlights how personal relationships can challenge existing assumptions about Islam. Martin’s own account presents his decision as a gradual process shaped by years of experience and reflection.

Robert Martin’s journey from atheism to Islam was not described as a sudden change. His experiences with Muslims, visits to Palestine and reading of the Quran appear to have influenced his views over time.

His story shows how personal experiences can shape beliefs and identity. It also highlights the role that learning, relationships and reflection can play in a person’s spiritual journey.
