(Web Desk): The Meteorological Department has warned of an intense heatwave across much of Pakistan, with temperatures expected to reach 46°C before rain arrives later this week.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave warning for large parts of the country, forecasting extremely hot and dry weather over the coming days, particularly in the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

According to the PMD, temperatures are expected to rise significantly from today, with several districts likely to experience severe heat. Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda and Dera Ismail Khan could see temperatures reaching as high as 46°C.

While most low-lying areas will remain under intense heat, some upper districts including Swat, Dir and Chitral are expected to receive rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at isolated locations. These showers may provide temporary relief from the soaring temperatures.

Weather officials said the ongoing heatwave is likely to continue in Islamabad, northern Punjab and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until June 10. However, a change in weather conditions is expected from June 11 and 12, when rainfall may affect several regions.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also forecast rain and thunderstorms in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab during the same period. Cities including Rawalpindi and Lahore may receive rainfall along with gusty winds and thunder.

According to weather experts, Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Mansehra and Abbottabad are among the areas likely to receive rain on June 11 and 12. Similar weather conditions are expected in Zhob and Musa Khel districts of Balochistan.

Meanwhile, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana are expected to remain hot, while Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir could begin receiving widespread rainfall from June 12 onward.
