Glacier burst in Swat traps 7 climbers
A glacier burst in the Matiltan Valley of Kalam, Swat, injured several mountaineers and left one climber missing, prompting a large-scale rescue operation in the mountainous region.
According to rescue officials, a group of seven climbers was heading toward the base camp of “Little K2” when the glacier suddenly burst, causing a dangerous situation on the route. The incident occurred in a remote and difficult-to-access area, creating significant challenges for emergency responders.
Rescue authorities said three climbers from Rawalpindi sustained injuries in the incident. Medical teams provided first aid at the site before transferring the injured individuals to Saidu Sharif Hospital for further treatment. Hospital sources reported that the injured climbers are receiving medical care and are in stable condition.
Officials stated that emergency teams were dispatched immediately on the instructions of District Emergency Officer Syed Shoaib Mansoor. Rescue workers reached the affected area and launched search and recovery efforts despite the difficult terrain and harsh mountain conditions.
Authorities confirmed that one climber, identified as Syed Ali Shah from Khwazakhela, remains missing. Search teams are continuing efforts to locate him, but challenging weather conditions and rugged landscapes are slowing the operation.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by mountaineers and tourists visiting northern Pakistan during the summer climbing season. Experts have urged climbers to closely monitor weather and glacier conditions before undertaking expeditions in high-altitude regions.
Rescue officials said operations will continue until the missing climber is found and all affected individuals are safely accounted for.
