Punjab to upgrade hundreds of high schools to higher secondary
Schools asked to submit required information
According to official sources, the School Education Department has sought detailed data from government high schools to assess whether they meet the requirements for higher secondary education.
The information includes the availability of classrooms, science laboratories, teaching staff, student enrolment, and other essential facilities required for intermediate classes.
Officials said the data will help identify schools capable of offering FA and FSc programmes without compromising educational standards. The department believes careful planning will ensure that only eligible schools are included in the first phase of the project.
Third-party inspections to determine eligibility
Authorities said all shortlisted schools will undergo independent third-party inspections before receiving approval for upgradation. Inspection teams will examine infrastructure, classroom capacity, laboratories, libraries, and other educational facilities.
Only schools that successfully meet the required standards will be upgraded to the higher secondary level. Officials said the inspection process is intended to ensure transparency and maintain quality across the education system.
Thousands of schools participate in the process
According to sources, Punjab currently has around 6,000 government high schools. So far, nearly 5,800 schools have submitted the required information to the School Education Department.
Officials said the strong response reflects the willingness of schools across the province to become part of the government’s education improvement programme. The department will now review the submitted information before moving to the next stage of the process.
Nearly 800 schools seek higher secondary status
Sources said 795 government high schools have expressed interest in being upgraded to higher secondary institutions. These schools informed the department that they already have sufficient land, classrooms, and other facilities needed to start intermediate classes.
