LAHORE (Web Desk): Pakistan Railways will restore the Babu Passenger and Sandal Express services on August 20 and 21 after years of suspension, with officials promising more train revivals and improved passenger facilities.

Babu Passenger to return from August 20

According to the Ministry of Railways, the Babu Passenger train will resume operations on August 20. The train will operate between Lahore and Lala Musa, restoring an important regional rail service for passengers.

Officials said the route serves thousands of daily commuters, students, and business travellers. Passengers who have long awaited the return of the service will once again have access to an affordable travel option.

Sandal Express to resume from August 21

Pakistan Railways will also restore the Sandal Express service from August 21. The train will operate between Multan and Sargodha via Jhang, providing an important transport link across central Punjab.

Officials believe the restored service will improve travel convenience for residents, workers, and students using the route. The train is also expected to support economic activity by making travel easier between several key cities.

Both trains were suspended during the pandemic

The Babu Passenger and Sandal Express services were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Pakistan Railways reduced several operations due to lower passenger demand and operational challenges. Since then, many passengers have repeatedly called for the restoration of these routes.

According to the railways minister, public demand played an important role in the decision to resume both services. Officials believe the revival reflects the continued improvement of Pakistan Railways’ operations.

Minister says more train services will return

Muhammad Hanif Abbasi said Pakistan Railways is working to restore additional suspended train services later this year. He said the government is committed to strengthening the railway network and improving transport facilities across Pakistan.

According to the minister, restoring suspended routes is part of a broader effort to improve passenger convenience and encourage more people to travel by rail. He added that further announcements regarding additional train services will be made in the coming months.

Passenger facilities are also to be improved

The railways minister said Pakistan Railways will continue improving passenger facilities alongside the restoration of train services. He said these improvements are being introduced in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for modernising the railway sector.

Officials said efforts are underway to improve services at railway stations and provide passengers with a more comfortable travel experience. They added that enhancing customer service remains one of the department’s top priorities.

Railway revival expected to benefit travellers

Transport experts believe restoring suspended train services can improve mobility and provide passengers with more affordable travel options. They say stronger railway connectivity can also reduce pressure on road transport while supporting business and tourism.

Improved train services may encourage more people to choose rail travel for both short- and long-distance journeys. A stronger railway network can also enhance regional connectivity and contribute to economic growth.

More developments expected in the railway sector

The restoration of the Babu Passenger and Sandal Express marks another step in Pakistan Railways’ efforts to expand passenger services. Passengers are now waiting to see which additional routes will be revived later this year.

Officials have assured travellers that more improvements and service enhancements are under consideration. Further details about future train restorations are expected to be announced by Pakistan Railways in the coming months.
