Hajj 2027 payment method change in Pakistan: Here's what pilgrims need to know
Pakistan is preparing to overhaul its Hajj 2027 payment system, with authorities deciding that all payments under the government and private Hajj schemes will be collected through a single bank instead of multiple financial institutions.
According to sources, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has been selected to handle Hajj-related payments, replacing the previous system under which applicants could deposit their money through 14 different banks. The move is aimed at simplifying the payment process and improving efficiency for intending pilgrims.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs is expected to sign a formal agreement with HBL in the coming days, after which the bank will officially manage all financial transactions related to the government Hajj scheme.
Pilgrims to benefit from online payment facility
One of the biggest changes under the new system is the introduction of a more convenient payment process for applicants.
Instead of visiting a bank branch to deposit Hajj expenses, intending pilgrims will be able to submit their payments online from their homes. Those who prefer in-person transactions will still have the option of visiting an HBL branch, which will be the only bank authorized to receive Hajj payments.
Officials believe the new arrangement will reduce processing time, improve transparency and provide a smoother experience for applicants across Pakistan.
Why only one bank was selected
Sources said several commercial banks expressed interest in handling Hajj 2027 payments.
However, the final selection was made after evaluating banks based on the strength of their nationwide branch network, digital banking services and overall ability to facilitate a large number of applicants during the Hajj application process.
Authorities believe a centralized banking system will make financial management easier while reducing administrative complications associated with multiple banking partners.
Hajj applications likely to begin in August
According to sources, applications under the government Hajj scheme 2027 are expected to open in the middle of August.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs is expected to announce the complete application schedule, eligibility criteria and payment deadlines shortly. Prospective pilgrims have been advised to keep an eye on official announcements and prepare the required documents in advance.
Once applications open, eligible applicants will be able to submit their forms and complete payment through the newly designated banking system.
Pakistan's Hajj quota for 2027
Pakistan has been allocated a total Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims for 2027.
Under the approved distribution, 60 percent of the quota has been reserved for the government Hajj scheme, while 40 percent has been allocated to private Hajj operators.
As a result, 107,322 pilgrims are expected to perform Hajj under the government scheme, while 71,888 pilgrims will travel through licensed private Hajj operators.
Officials say the quota distribution is intended to ensure a balanced system that provides opportunities through both public and private sectors.
Authorities aim for a smoother Hajj process
The latest changes reflect the government's broader efforts to modernize Hajj operations by introducing digital services and streamlining financial procedures.
Officials believe online payment options, centralized banking services and improved digital infrastructure will make the application process more convenient for intending pilgrims while enhancing transparency and reducing delays.
Further details regarding application procedures, payment schedules and other Hajj 2027 arrangements are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the coming weeks.
