Punjab has introduced a new system for collecting the sanitation fee from urban residents and businesses, with charges based on property size and commercial category. The Excise and Taxation Department will collect the fee alongside property tax from the financial year 2026-27.

The agreement between the Suthra Punjab Authority and the Excise and Taxation Department covers household surveys, printing sanitation bills and resolving complaints related to billing.

Monthly charges for homes

Under the new urban tariff, homes up to 5 marla will pay Rs300 per month, while properties measuring 5 to 10 marla will be charged Rs500.

The monthly fee rises to Rs1,000 for 10 to 20 marla homes, Rs2,000 for 20 to 40 marla properties and Rs5,000 for houses larger than 40 marla. These tariff slabs are also listed by the official Suthra Punjab programme.

Commercial units included

Small commercial units will pay Rs500 per month, medium units Rs1,000 and large commercial units Rs3,000.

The Excise Department will receive a 1% service charge for collecting the sanitation fee. Officials say the new mechanism is intended to bring fee collection, billing and complaint handling under a unified system across Punjab’s urban areas.

The move follows earlier decisions to introduce sanitation or garbage charges under the Suthra Punjab programme.
