(Web Desk): The Punjab government has imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding and introduced additional restrictions under Section 144 to ensure security during Muharram processions and gatherings.

The Punjab government has announced a province-wide ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, corresponding to June 25 and 26, as part of enhanced security arrangements for Muharram processions and religious gatherings.

The decision was made through a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department under Section 144, which has been enforced to maintain public order, religious harmony, and the safety of citizens during the sensitive period. Officials stated that the Muharram security Punjab plan aims to prevent any attempts by anti-social elements, extremists, or miscreants to disrupt peace.

According to the notification, intelligence assessments have indicated potential threats to law and order during Muharram. Authorities fear that certain groups could exploit religious gatherings to provoke sectarian tensions or incite violence. As a result, several precautionary measures have been introduced across the province.

In addition to the pillion riding ban Punjab, the government has prohibited the carrying of weapons in public places, the use of provocative slogans, and the display of signs, banners, or material that may inflame religious sentiments. The spread of sectarian hatred through social media and digital platforms has also been strictly banned under the Section 144 Muharram orders.

Authorities have further outlawed the construction of rooftop fortifications, known as morchas, along procession routes. Residents and spectators will also not be allowed to sit or gather on rooftops overlooking Muharram processions.

However, exemptions from the pillion riding ban have been granted to women, children, senior citizens, journalists, and uniformed law enforcement personnel. Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators, with police authorized to register cases under relevant provisions of the law to ensure peaceful Muharram observances.
