(Web Desk): A Rs1.64 per unit power hike may increase electricity bills nationwide next month if approved.

A potential increase in electricity prices has raised concern among consumers across the country, as a hike of Rs1.64 per unit is likely to be added to next month’s bills. The proposed increase comes amid rising power generation costs and could put additional financial pressure on households already dealing with inflation.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is scheduled to hold a public hearing today (Tuesday) on a request submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The request is related to the fuel cost adjustment for the month of February.

According to the application, the cost of electricity generation in February stood at Rs8.15 per unit. However, the cost at which electricity was supplied to distribution companies reached Rs8.37 per unit. In comparison, the pre-determined reference cost was set at Rs6.73 per unit. The difference between these figures has led to the proposed increase of Rs1.64 per unit.

If approved, the price hike will be applicable to consumers across the country, including those served by K-Electric in Karachi. Officials estimate that the increase could impose an additional burden of more than Rs14 billion on electricity users nationwide.

The final decision will depend on Nepra’s review after the public hearing, but if approved, consumers should prepare for higher electricity bills in the coming month.
