ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): Pakistan’s new telecom law has triggered public debate after reports of a Rs50,000,000 penalty and new Right of Way rules, but the government says many claims about the bill are being misunderstood.

What is the new telecom bill about?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Restructuring Amendment Bill was recently passed by the National Assembly.

Since then, many people have questioned whether telecom companies will be allowed to install infrastructure on private property without the owner’s permission.

According to the Ministry of IT, the new law does not allow telecom companies to take over or occupy individual homes. Officials clarified that if any installation is needed on a residential property, it will still require the owner’s agreement and fair compensation.

Why was the law introduced?

The government explained that the bill is mainly aimed at making it easier to expand telecom infrastructure Pakistan needs for faster and more reliable internet services.

It said high-speed internet and fiber optic networks should be treated as essential public utilities, just like electricity, gas, and water.

Who could face the Rs50,000,000 penalty?

The large Rs50,000,000 penalty mentioned in the telecom bill Pakistan is mainly intended for large housing societies, commercial developers, and other organizations that block telecom infrastructure projects or demand excessive fees before allowing network installations.

Officials believe these restrictions have delayed the expansion of telecom infrastructure Pakistan in many areas.

By removing unnecessary barriers, the government hopes to improve internet access and attract more foreign investment in Pakistan’s technology sector.

Are homeowners affected?

The Ministry of IT stressed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Restructuring Amendment Bill is designed to balance public interest with private property rights Pakistan.

It said homeowners will continue to be protected under the law, and telecom companies cannot install equipment on private residential property without consent and appropriate compensation.
