(Web Desk): Pakistan petrol quota plan unveiled as govt moves to enforce monthly fuel limits via digital system amid energy crisis and Strait of Hormuz risks.

The federal government is set to introduce petrol rationing in Pakistan, enforcing a monthly fuel quota for private vehicles through a nationwide digital monitoring system to tackle the deepening energy crisis.

The move comes amid rising global uncertainty following tensions linked to Iran and potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—a vital corridor for global oil supply. As fuel pressures mount, Pakistan is accelerating measures to regulate consumption and ensure equitable distribution.

Monthly Petrol Quota System for Private Vehicles

Under the proposed policy, car owners will be assigned a fixed monthly petrol quota, restricting how much fuel they can purchase. Once implemented, individuals will not be allowed to exceed their allocated limit at petrol pumps.

Officials say the initiative aims to curb excessive fuel usage, prevent hoarding, and manage shortages effectively during the ongoing crisis.

Digital Fuel Management System at Petrol Pumps

A digital fuel management system will be deployed across petrol stations nationwide to enforce the quota mechanism. The system will track fuel purchases in real time, ensuring strict compliance.

Fuel stations will be equipped with advanced mobile devices to digitally record transactions and monitor fuel distribution. The groundwork, including testing and operational evaluation, has already been completed.

Role of IT Bodies and Regulatory Authorities

The National IT Board and Ministry of IT have finalized testing of both the mobile devices and the application required for implementation.

Each petrol pump will receive approved smartphones, costing around Rs36,000, which will be used for real-time monitoring. These devices have been verified in coordination with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Oil marketing companies will finance the procurement of these devices, while distribution will be managed through the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority.

The system will operate through a dedicated mobile application developed under the Pakistan Digital Authority, ensuring transparency and efficiency.

Implementation Nears Final Approval

The Ministry of IT has submitted the project summary to the Cabinet Division for approval, while OGRA has been directed to issue necessary instructions to oil companies for procurement and deployment.

Officials confirm that key preparations—including device verification, app testing, and system integration—are complete, and the policy is ready for rollout once approved.

Petrol Quota Announcement Expected Soon

The government is expected to soon announce the exact monthly petrol quota per vehicle, marking a significant shift in Pakistan’s fuel policy. The initiative is designed to stabilize fuel supply, improve management, and reduce pressure on national energy resources.
