Government plans mobile service suspension for Muharram security
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police has formally requested the provincial Home Department to partially suspend mobile phone services on the 9th and 10th of Muharram as part of enhanced security arrangements across the province.
According to official sources, the police department has finalized its comprehensive security plan for Muharram-ul-Haram to ensure peace and maintain law and order during religious processions and gatherings.
The confidential security report, prepared on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, recommends placing several districts on high alert due to potential security concerns.
Authorities said the security strategy includes support from the Pakistan Army, Frontier Constabulary (FC), and the use of modern surveillance technology to strengthen monitoring and response capabilities.
Under the plan, eight districts have been declared the most sensitive, including Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and Kurram.
In addition, six more districts have been placed in the sensitive category, where security arrangements for Muharram processions and majalis will be significantly tightened.
The report states that more than 43,000 police officers and personnel will be deployed across 14 districts to provide security during Muharram events.
FC platoons will also be stationed in highly sensitive areas to assist local police forces, while the Pakistan Army will remain available to provide full support in case of any emergency situation.
Officials said the temporary suspension of mobile services is being considered as a precautionary measure to prevent security threats and ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram across the province.
