Rahim Yar Khan (Web Desk): A fire breaks out in the operation theater of Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, prompting authorities to evacuate patients from the affected area.

Fire brigade officials say an electrical short circuit is apparently behind the incident. Thick smoke spread through parts of the hospital after the fire erupted.

Rescue teams reach the hospital within two minutes and immediately began efforts to control the blaze. Officials say the fire was brought under control in around 10 minutes. No casualties are reported so far.

The incident, however, raises fresh concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness at major public hospitals in Punjab.

Authorities seek immediate report

Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa takes notice of the incident and seeks an immediate report from the relevant authorities.

He directs the Assistant Commissioner to visit the hospital, assess the situation, and coordinate with the departments concerned.

The district administration says the circumstances surrounding the fire are being reviewed. Hospital authorities are also asked to submit a detailed report about the incident and the safety arrangements in place at the facility.

Cause of fire under investigation

Officials say preliminary information points to an electrical short circuit as the possible cause of the fire. However, the exact cause is expected to be established through a detailed investigation.

Authorities are also reviewing whether the hospital has all the required fire safety arrangements and whether emergency procedures are being properly followed. The investigation will also assess the response to the fire and identify any weaknesses that may need immediate attention.

Patients evacuated from affected area

Patients in the affected area are evacuated as smoke spreads through parts of the hospital. The quick response by rescue teams helps bring the fire under control within a short period. Officials say no deaths or injuries have been reported in the incident so far.

The evacuation also highlights the importance of having clear emergency routes and trained staff who can quickly move patients to safer areas during a fire. This is especially important in hospitals, where many patients may need assistance to leave their wards or treatment areas.

Fire safety concerns grow after recent incidents

The Rahim Yar Khan hospital fire comes amid a series of recent incidents that have renewed concerns about fire safety in healthcare facilities.

A deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on August 26 killed 14 newborns. Investigations into the tragedy raise questions about fire safety systems, emergency preparedness and staff training.

More recently, a fire at Lahore General Hospital’s gynaecology ward forced the evacuation of around 70 people, including pregnant women. The blaze reportedly started in an exhaust fan system and filled the ward and nearby corridor with smoke.

These incidents put greater focus on fire prevention and emergency response at hospitals across the country.

Hospitals face special fire safety challenges

Hospitals need stronger safety measures because many patients cannot evacuate without help.

Newborns, critically ill patients, elderly people and patients recovering from surgery may depend entirely on doctors, nurses and other staff during an emergency. For this reason, hospitals need working fire alarms, suitable firefighting equipment, clear evacuation routes and regular emergency drills.

Staff should also know how to respond quickly when a fire starts and how to safely move patients away from danger. Regular inspections can help identify electrical faults and other possible fire hazards before they lead to serious incidents.

Investigation to determine next steps

Authorities in Rahim Yar Khan are reviewing the incident and the safety arrangements at Shaikh Zayed Hospital. The detailed report is expected to help determine what caused the fire and whether all required safety measures were in place.

Officials say a comprehensive investigation will establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The latest fire serves as another reminder that hospitals must remain prepared for emergencies, particularly in areas where patients may have limited ability to move without assistance.
