Electricity prices may increase by Rs2.52 per unit for one month under the July monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear the request today.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has asked NEPRA to approve the proposed increase, which could place an additional financial burden on electricity consumers across the country.

If approved, the adjustment will be reflected in electricity bills for the applicable billing period, although the final impact will depend on NEPRA's decision.

High generation costs cited

The CPPA has provided details of power generation costs recorded during July in support of its request.

According to the agency, electricity generated from diesel cost around Rs50 per unit during the month. Power produced using imported coal recorded a generation cost of Rs54.47 per unit.

Electricity generated from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost Rs47.37 per unit, according to the figures submitted to the regulator.

Final decision after review

NEPRA will examine the data submitted by the CPPA and review the relevant generation costs during today's hearing.

The regulator will then determine whether the requested adjustment is justified and decide the final amount to be passed on to consumers.

Following completion of the hearing and review of the submitted figures, NEPRA is expected to issue its formal notification.

The proposed increase comes as consumers continue to face pressure from electricity costs, making the regulator's decision important for households and businesses across Pakistan.
