Pakistan Railways set to restore two passenger trains – revival dates revealed

The move is part of efforts to bring back services and improve the railway network.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the government is focused on better connectivity and major improvements across the railway system. The restoration plan is expected to give passengers more travel options on important routes.

Mohenjo Daro train to return

The Mohenjo Daro Passenger Train will resume operations on September 15. Another passenger train connecting Sialkot and Rawalpindi will start running from October 15.

The government has recently increased efforts to restore passenger services across the country. Officials are also working on railway stations, tracks and other infrastructure.

Revenue rises despite losses

Pakistan Railways recorded revenue of Rs115,200,000,000 in FY2025–26, showing a 24.2 per cent increase from the previous year. Despite the higher revenue, the organisation continues to face financial losses.

Passenger demand has also remained strong during the financial year. Pakistan Railways carried 24.16 million passengers between July and March of FY2025–26.

Railway system faces major challenges

The railway network still faces problems such as ageing infrastructure, damaged tracks and maintenance issues. The organisation has also faced scrutiny over operational mishaps and safety concerns.

Authorities are working to improve railway stations, restore passenger services and upgrade infrastructure. The broader goal is to modernise the rail network and make train travel more reliable.

Pakistan Railways ticket prices generally range from Rs1,500 to Rs4,000 for Economy class. AC class fares usually range from Rs6,000 to Rs13,000, depending on the service and route.

The return of two trains could provide relief to passengers who depend on rail travel for affordable long-distance journeys. Strong passenger numbers show that demand for railway services remains high.

The bigger challenge is improving the condition of tracks and other infrastructure. Restoring trains will be more effective if safety, maintenance and service quality improve at the same time.
