Kohat Police Lines attack death toll rises as two injured die

The latest fatalities include Dr Rab Nawaz and a young pushcart vendor who suffered injuries during the attack.

Their deaths have increased the number of people killed in the assault, which began with a suicide car bombing and was followed by gunfire and grenade attacks inside the Police Lines.

The attack has also led to the registration of a terrorism case against unidentified attackers as investigators continue examining how the assault was carried out.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) registered the case at its police station in Kohat following a complaint submitted by the Station House Officer of Kohat City Police Station.

The case includes charges related to terrorism, murder and attempted murder, along with other relevant offences.

Two more victims die from injuries

Police said two people who had been receiving treatment for injuries suffered during the attack later died.

Dr Rab Nawaz was among the victims, while a young pushcart vendor also succumbed to his injuries.

Their deaths came after earlier casualty figures had placed the death toll at 24. The latest fatalities have now pushed the overall number of deaths to 26, according to the latest police information.

The attack had already caused a large number of injuries, with earlier reports putting the number of wounded at around 130.

The victims included police personnel as well as civilians who were present in or around the Police Lines when the attack took place.

The rising death toll highlights the severity of the assault and the prolonged nature of the violence that followed the initial explosion.

CTD registers terrorism case

The formal investigation has now moved forward with an FIR registered against unidentified terrorists.

According to the FIR, the attackers used an explosives-laden vehicle in the initial suicide attack at the Police Lines mosque.

After the explosion, the attackers opened fire and attempted to enter the Police Lines premises.

The FIR also states that hand grenades were used during the assault, adding another element to the attack that investigators are examining.

Police have included several serious charges in the case, covering terrorism, murder and attempted murder.

The attackers remain unidentified in the FIR, while investigators are continuing efforts to determine their identities and establish the full circumstances of the assault.

Police and security forces fought back

The FIR says police personnel resisted after the attackers entered the Police Lines.

Army, police and CTD personnel later reached the area and took part in the operation to contain the attackers and clear the compound.

The assault turned into a prolonged security operation, with personnel working to clear buildings and secure different parts of the Police Lines.

Security forces eventually completed the clearance operation after a lengthy gun battle.

Earlier reporting said the operation continued for around 21 hours and ended after all eight attackers involved in the assault were killed.

The prolonged operation reflected the scale of the attack, which involved an initial suicide bombing followed by armed attacks inside the compound.

FIR records earlier casualty figure

The FIR recorded an earlier figure of 21 deaths when the case details were prepared.

It also stated that a large number of people were injured and that both government and private property was damaged during the attack.

The difference between the FIR figure and the latest death toll is linked to injured victims who later died while receiving treatment.

This means the investigation document does not reflect the final reported casualty figure.

Police are continuing to gather information about the attack, including the sequence of events, the weapons used and the people involved.
