CDA considers new electric bus service
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is planning a double-decker electric bus service in Islamabad to promote tourism. The proposed service could give residents and visitors a new way to explore the capital.
Double-decker buses planned for tourist route
The CDA initially plans to operate four buses on a 25-kilometer city tour. The route would start from F-9 Park and cover major attractions including Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa and Shakarparian.
The proposed buses would be electric and environment-friendly. The plan is aimed at supporting tourism while providing another transport option in the capital.
HIT to assess cost and feasibility
The CDA has approached Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to conduct a feasibility study and provide cost estimates for the buses. The authority will decide the next steps after receiving HIT’s recommendations.
A CDA official said the service could become operational within three months if everything goes according to plan. However, the final decision will depend on the feasibility assessment and other arrangements.
“Nothing is final yet, we may go for importing buses from China. We are waiting for input from HIT,” said the official However, the proposed double-decker buses will be environment-friendly electric vehicles.
CDA already operates electric buses
The CDA already operates an electric bus service through a contractor on more than 20 routes across Islamabad. The service has a fleet of more than 160 buses and receives a strong response from residents.
The authority has also announced plans for a tram service in Islamabad several times in the past. However, those plans have yet to become operational.
The proposed double-decker service could add a tourism-focused transport option in Islamabad. Its launch will depend on the feasibility study, estimated cost and the CDA’s final decision.
