Poland has entered a dangerous new phase of the Russia-Ukraine war after shooting down drones that crossed into its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine.
This marks the first direct use of Polish and NATO air defenses in the conflict, an action Warsaw has branded “an act of aggression.”
The incident unfolded early Wednesday when radars tracked more than 10 drones flying from western Ukraine into Poland.
Military commanders confirmed that several of these drones were destroyed while searches are still underway to locate crash sites.
The army urged residents of Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin provinces to remain indoors, warning that the situation posed a real threat to civilians.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said operations were still ongoing and that he was in constant communication with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
He called for an emergency meeting of ministers to assess the situation.
The drone strikes disrupted daily life in Warsaw, where Chopin Airport temporarily suspended flights, forcing multiple diversions to other Polish cities.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that four airports, including Rzeszow–Jasionka, a key hub for arms shipments to Ukraine, were closed due to security concerns.
With Russia silent on the matter and U.S. lawmakers calling it an “act of war,” tensions in Eastern Europe have sharply escalated, raising fears of a broader NATO-Russia confrontation.
