BEIJING (Web Desk): A young Pakistani PhD scholar in China is making headlines not only for his cutting-edge solar aircraft research but also for his rising fame as a musician.

Rana Shahid, a 2023 PhD candidate at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), is turning heads for blending science with creativity. His recent performance at the Asia New Singer competition semi-finals in Nanjing impressed audiences with a powerful mix of Urdu and English lyrics.

As vice president of the university’s guitar club, he is a familiar face at campus events. Shahid also performs Chinese songs, including the popular ballad “Qing Hua”, and is now working on his first Chinese-language composition.

But music is only half of his story. Shahid is leading research on solar-powered aircraft for delivery and short-distance transport. His team has already submitted a prototype in a national competition. “We’re creating practical ways to tap into solar energy – it’s a sustainable approach to aviation,” he shared.

His journey into aerospace began in childhood, leading him to NUAA where his professor provided both research support and help in adapting to life in China. Inspired by Pakistani pop legend Atif Aslam, Shahid self-learned guitar through online tutorials and even co-produced a music video titled “Corona Awareness” with SAMMA TV before moving abroad.

Now his songs are streamed on Tencent and NetEase Cloud Music, while his live performances at venues like the Confucius Temple in Nanjing continue to draw attention. He also enjoys exploring Chinese history and culture through sites like Purple Mountain and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum.

Looking ahead, Shahid plans to contribute to solar energy and aviation advancements in both China and Pakistan, while continuing music as a bridge for cultural exchange.

Rana Shahid’s story highlights the powerful blend of technology and art. His solar aircraft research reflects the growing importance of sustainable energy in aviation, while his music bridges cultural gaps between Pakistan and China. By excelling in both science and creativity, Shahid represents a new face of Pakistani youth — globally competitive, adaptable, and influential.

His dual achievements also show how academic and artistic pursuits can reinforce one another, shaping a holistic personality. For Pakistan, his success abroad not only boosts national pride but also signals opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy and cultural diplomacy.
