US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States could consider taking control of key oil assets in Iran, including the strategically vital Kharg Island, amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
Speaking in an interview with British media, Trump stated that gaining access to Iran’s oil resources could be a priority, adding that multiple strategic options are currently under review.
Kharg Island Emerges as Strategic Target
Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub, has come into focus as a potential target for US strategic action. Trump noted that control over the facility remains a possibility, though any decision would depend on a detailed assessment of available options.
He suggested that such a move could involve a temporary US presence in the region to secure oil infrastructure and ensure operational control.
US Interest in Iran Oil Resources
The US president emphasized that securing access to Iranian oil could be a key objective, arguing that it aligns with broader strategic and economic interests.
However, he acknowledged criticism from some US policymakers who have questioned the feasibility and implications of such a move, dismissing those concerns as “unreasonable.”

Comparison with Venezuela Strategy
Trump also drew parallels with earlier US actions in Venezuela, where Washington sought to influence control over oil resources during political unrest.
Analysts say the comparison signals a potential blueprint for how similar strategies could be applied in the Middle East, though the geopolitical risks remain significantly higher.
Iran Responds with Defensive Measures
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed ongoing defensive operations, stating that several advanced drones had been intercepted and destroyed.
According to Iranian officials, approximately 140 enemy drones have been neutralized so far, including recent interceptions in coastal areas of Hormozgan province.
Rising Middle East Tensions and Energy Concerns
The developments come amid intensifying Middle East tensions, with concerns growing over energy security and potential disruption to global oil markets.
Experts warn that any move targeting Iranian oil infrastructure could significantly impact global supply chains and escalate conflict across the region.
