(Web Desk): South Korea reported explosion and fire on its ship in the Strait of Hormuz, raising safety concern in one of the world’s most important sea routes.

The incident happened at around 8:40 pm in Seoul time when an explosion and fire struck a vessel operated by a South Korean shipping company. The ship was anchored near the waters of the United Arab Emirates inside the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials confirmed that there were no casualties among the 24 crew members on board. The crew included six South Koreans and 18 foreign nationals.

The foreign ministry said, “The cause of the explosion and fire, as well as the specific extent of the damage, are currently being investigated.” Authorities are still trying to determine what triggered the incident.

The vessel involved is identified as the HMM Namu, a cargo ship nearly 180 meters long. It was sailing under the Panama flag, according to MarineTraffic tracking data.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global oil and trade shipments. Any disruption in this area immediately raises concerns for energy-dependent countries like South Korea.

The incident comes amid rising tension in the region. Iranian state media reported that Tehran’s navy fired “warning shots” in the strait following the movement of American cruisers into the Gulf.

South Korea relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil imports, much of which pass through this strategic waterway. The ongoing instability has already pushed Seoul to look for alternative energy sources.

The foreign ministry added, “The Korean government will communicate closely with relevant countries regarding this matter and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of Korean vessels and crew members within the Strait of Hormuz.”

Officials say safety of ships and crew remains the top priority as investigations continue. More details are expected once technical assessments are completed.

This incident shows how sensitive the Strait of Hormuz is for global trade. Even a single explosion can raise serious concerns for shipping safety and energy supply routes.
