Punjab University restores private BA, MA exams after 2-year ban?
The university says the move could reopen higher education opportunities for students unable to attend regular classes.
Punjab University Syndicate supports restoration
According to the university registrar, the Punjab University Syndicate has passed a resolution supporting the return of private BA and MA examinations. The university has written to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and the HEC to seek permission for their restoration.
The letter argues that ending these programmes has reduced access to higher education for a large section of the population. It calls for the authorities to reconsider the decision and allow private examinations to resume.
Private exams offered access to higher education
The university’s resolution highlights the importance of private examinations for students living in rural and remote areas. These programmes allowed people to pursue degrees without attending regular university classes.
Working students also benefited because they could continue their education alongside their jobs. Restoring the examinations could provide another route to higher education for people who face difficulties attending regular classes.
HEC ban remains a key hurdle
The Higher Education Commission imposed a ban on private BA and MA degree programmes two years ago. Punjab University’s latest move seeks approval to bring these examinations back, but the proposal still requires the relevant authorities’ consideration.
The university has approached both the provincial legislature and the HEC as part of its effort to restore the programmes. Further decisions will determine whether students can once again register for private BA and MA examinations.
What restoration could mean for students
The return of private BA and MA examinations could help students who cannot afford the time or expense of regular university education. It may be especially useful for working people and those living far from educational institutions.
However, the proposal is not yet the same as a final approval to restart the programmes. Students should wait for an official announcement before making plans to register for these examinations.
