Iran has announced a new petrol price hike for high-consumption users, with the third-tier rate doubling from 5,000 to 10,000 tomans per litre from September 8. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the measure will apply only after monthly consumption exceeds 110 litres.

The decision comes as Iran faces economic pressure, fuel supply challenges and tighter US sanctions. Iranian authorities say the pricing change is aimed at managing rising fuel consumption and maintaining stability in the supply and demand system.

110-litre fuel quota remains unchanged

The first 110 litres of monthly petrol will continue to be sold at existing subsidised rates. Consumers can purchase the first 60 litres at 1,500 tomans per litre, followed by another 50 litres at 3,000 tomans per litre.

Only petrol consumed beyond the 110-litre quota will be charged at the new 10,000-toman rate. The increase effectively doubles the previous third-tier price and targets users with higher monthly fuel consumption.

Iran faces pressure over fuel consumption

Iran has traditionally maintained some of the world's lowest petrol prices through heavy subsidies. However, fuel consumption and economic pressures have made reforms increasingly sensitive, with authorities previously concerned that price increases could trigger public unrest.

One toman equals 10 Iranian rials, meaning the new third-tier price is 100,000 rials per litre.
