The Palestinian news agency WAFA, quoting local sources, reported that “Israeli forces detained Sheikh al-Abbasi inside the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque” without providing any clear reason for the arrest.
This action came at a sensitive time, as Ramazan is about to begin, and large numbers of worshippers are preparing to gather at the mosque for prayers.
Just hours before his arrest, Israeli authorities had already barred Sheikh al-Abbasi from entering the mosque compound for one week. The order could be extended. The imam had earlier said he was not told why he was banned.

He recently returned to his religious duties after spending a year recovering from a serious car accident. The sudden arrest and ban have caused shock and concern among Palestinians.
According to reports, the arrest happened during what many describe as increasing restrictions at Al Aqsa. These include limits on imams, preachers, and worshippers, as well as tighter controls on entry to the mosque compound.
The Islamic Waqf, which manages the site, has also faced reported difficulties in making Ramadan preparations. Meanwhile, there have been claims of more frequent visits by Israeli settlers under heavy police protection.
Hamas strongly condemned the arrest on Tuesday. The group said the move was an interference in the mosque’s affairs and an attack on its religious leaders. It accused Israeli authorities of escalating violations and trying to change the situation at the holy site.
