(Web Desk): Whale graveyard dating back five million years discovered in Indian Ocean deep sea site shocks scientists with massive deep sea find.

The whale graveyard dating back five million years discovered has created huge curiosity among researchers worldwide.

Scientists have discovered an enormous underwater whale graveyard stretching around 1,200km in the south-eastern Indian Ocean. The site lies nearly 7km deep in the Diamantina fracture zone.

The area is made up of deep ridges and trenches on the ocean floor. It is now being called one of the most unusual fossil discoveries ever recorded.

What makes this discovery even more surprising is its age. Some whale remains found here are around 5.3 million years old.

The underwater site was explored by researchers from China, Italy, and New Zealand. It is filled with organisms that may even include species new to science.

One researcher described the shock of the discovery in strong words. The statement said, "Discovering a necropolis of this scale was completely unexpected.

"The size of distribution, the depth and the age range were far beyond anything we had imagined."

During 32 deep sea dives, scientists collected samples from 485 whale fossil sites. They also studied active whale falls and many preserved skeletons.

Among the discoveries was an extinct whale skull known as Pterocetus benguelae. It is estimated to be 5.3 million years old.

Researchers also found a five-metre Antarctic minke whale carcass. A new species named Pterocetus diamantinae was also identified at the site.

The ecosystem is full of life despite extreme conditions. Jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans are surviving on whale remains across the area.

A scientist writing in Nature described the discovery as highly unique. The comment stated, "Peng and colleagues' encounter with a vast fossil graveyard is a truly unique discovery,

"Although the site has limited accessibility, it seems likely to hold many other exciting finds, and it will no doubt inspire more submersible dives in similar environments,

"Peng and colleagues' paper reminded me of a trailer for the first in a series of epic movies. I hope that there will be many more of these blockbusters to come."

Experts believe the site may still hide many undiscovered fossils. Further deep sea missions are expected to continue in the coming years.

The discovery is opening new questions about ancient whale life and ocean evolution. Scientists say it could change understanding of marine history.

This discovery is very rare in marine science. It shows how little we still know about the deep ocean. Scientists expect more surprising findings in future dives.
