Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the building had water in its basement. She linked the collapse to the accumulation of water and repair work being carried out at the old structure.

Gupta told reporters, “It is certain that there was water in the building’s basement, and due to accumulation of water, due to ongoing repair work, the old building collapsed,”

The statement points to water accumulation and ongoing repair work as possible factors behind the collapse. However, the available information did not indicate that a final investigation had established the exact cause.

Six people rescued alive

Several people were also rescued from the damaged building and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Gupta said six rescued people were in stable condition.

The deaths and injuries have raised fresh concerns about safety standards in crowded parts of Delhi. Older buildings can become particularly vulnerable when construction or repair work is carried out without adequate safety measures.
