Floods, landslides kill at least 25 across northern India

According to officials, at least 15 people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents in the Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts of Indian-administered Kashmir. Several others have also been reported missing.

In the northeastern state of Nagaland, persistent rainfall triggered multiple landslides that killed nine people. Rescue teams have so far recovered four bodies, according to a senior district official.

In the neighbouring state of Assam, one person died in flood-related incidents on Sunday. The state disaster management authority said more than 57,000 people across seven districts have been affected by torrential rainfall.

India’s weather department has warned that active monsoon conditions are likely to persist across the northwestern, eastern and northeastern parts of the country over the next six to seven days, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Nepal has also been severely affected by the monsoon. Since mid-June, floods, landslides, heavy rainfall and lightning strikes have killed 27 people, left one person missing and injured 69 others.

Police said several highways, including the main road linking Kathmandu with the southern plains, remain blocked by debris from landslides, disrupting transport and travel. Nepal’s weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across much of the country, with heavy rain expected in isolated areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Authorities in both India and Nepal have urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert, warning that continued rainfall could worsen the situation and hamper rescue and relief operations.
