US President Donald Trump reportedly switched from Qatar's gifted presidential aircraft to the older Air Force One after receiving security advice over potential threats linked to Iran, according to a report by The New York Times.

The newspaper claimed that US Secret Service officials advised Trump to avoid using the newly gifted aircraft when departing Türkiye following the NATO leaders' summit. Instead, they recommended flying on the older presidential jet due to concerns about possible threats from Iranian proxy groups.

The reported last-minute decision has raised questions about the security capabilities of the aircraft gifted by Qatar. According to the report, both President Trump and the presidential aircraft were considered potential targets, prompting security officials to recommend the change.

The report comes as Trump met senior advisers and cabinet members to discuss possible next steps regarding Iran, including whether to intensify military action following recent tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Trump had travelled to Türkiye aboard the newly gifted aircraft to attend the NATO summit on July 7. However, he reportedly returned to England using the older Air Force One after acting on the Secret Service's recommendation.

According to The New York Times, the new aircraft lacked some of the specialised security and counterterrorism technologies available on the traditional Air Force One, making the older jet the preferred option for the return journey.

The US Department of Justice has said its focus is not on the journalist who reported the story but on identifying those responsible for leaking classified information.
