Pete Hegseth breaks silence on possible 2028 White House bid
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected speculation that he could seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.
The denial came after reports emerged that Hegseth had discussed the possibility of running for president with close friends and associates.
Hegseth strongly rejected the claims in a post on X, calling them “100% false” and accusing the reports of relying on anonymous sources.

Hegseth denies possible presidential plans
The reports claimed Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, had discussed the possibility of a presidential campaign with people close to them.
The reports said his conservative views and support among President Donald Trump’s political base could potentially give him a platform for a future White House campaign.
However, there has been no formal announcement from Hegseth about seeking the presidency in 2028.
His response instead focused on his current responsibilities as head of the US defence establishment. A Pentagon spokesman also said Hegseth is not running for president and remains focused on leading the department.
The speculation gained attention after Hegseth appeared at the Iowa State Fair. Iowa traditionally plays an important role in the US presidential nomination process, so appearances by potential candidates are often closely watched.
However, attending a political event does not by itself confirm plans for a presidential campaign.
Republican race already drawing attention
Although the 2028 presidential election is still some time away, speculation about possible Republican candidates has already started.
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the senior Republicans frequently discussed as possible contenders.
Neither has formally announced a campaign for the 2028 Republican nomination.
Other Republican figures could also enter the race as the political landscape develops.
For Hegseth, however, the latest message is that his immediate priority remains his defence role rather than preparing for a presidential campaign.

What Hegseth’s denial means
Hegseth’s direct rejection puts the current speculation on hold, although political interest in his future is unlikely to disappear completely.
His position within the Trump administration gives him national visibility, while his strong conservative profile makes him a figure who could attract attention in future Republican politics.
Still, there is an important difference between being mentioned as a possible candidate and actually preparing to run.
At present, Hegseth has denied that he is considering a presidential campaign and has said his focus is on his current government responsibilities.
