Gunman killed after opening fire near White House
Secret Service personnel responded immediately, killing the attacker on the spot, according to American media reports.
The incident reportedly took place near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House complex, where the suspect suddenly began firing a pistol at Secret Service officers stationed in the area. Security personnel retaliated swiftly, preventing the suspect from advancing further toward the presidential residence.
Authorities identified the deceased attacker as 21-year-old Nasir Best, a resident of the U.S. state of Maryland. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was unable to gain entry into the White House premises before being neutralized by law enforcement officials.
Reports stated that President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting. Following the incident, the White House was immediately placed under lockdown, while additional security measures were enforced throughout the surrounding area. The lockdown was later lifted after officials confirmed that the situation had been brought under control.
According to U.S. media outlets, nearly 30 rounds were fired during the exchange. As a precautionary measure, snipers were also deployed on the roof of the White House to secure the area and monitor any potential threats.
