Progressive politician Abdul El-Sayed secured a narrow victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary against Haley Stevens, who was widely seen as the preferred candidate of the Democratic establishment. Hasan also said, “The same energy that enabled us to be a success as a media entity has enabled a lot of political candidates to be successes.” Many progressive candidates now use podcasts, livestreams and digital interviews to reach voters directly.
Independent political creators are becoming increasingly influential as public trust in traditional media continues to decline. Many Democratic candidates now appear on podcasts and online shows where they can discuss policies in greater detail than on television.

Popular progressive platforms continue to attract large audiences across YouTube, Twitch and newsletter services. Campaign strategists say these appearances help candidates build early support, raise campaign funds and connect with activists nationwide.
Political podcast host Sam Seder said, “I think we help create early enthusiasm.” Democratic strategist Jesse Lehrich also said candidates benefit by appearing on several trusted progressive platforms to expand their reach.
The rise of left-wing media is changing how progressive candidates communicate with voters and build political support. However, analysts say it could also increase divisions within the Democratic Party as ideological differences become more visible.
Abdul El-Sayed’s comparison with Zohran Mamdani
Political analysts are comparing Abdul El-Sayed with Zohran Mamdani because both are Muslim progressive Democrats who challenged candidates backed by the party establishment. Both have built strong support through grassroots campaigns, younger voters and independent digital media instead of relying mainly on traditional political networks.
Zohran Mamdani gained national attention after winning New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. His campaign focused on affordable housing, lower living costs, expanded public services and progressive economic policies, while attracting large numbers of young voters and volunteers.
Abdul El-Sayed has promoted progressive policies such as universal healthcare and has also benefited from support across left-wing media platforms.
