(Web Desk): At least 49 people lost their lives in Niger’s Sahara Desert after their truck broke down, leaving families stranded without water in scorching temperatures.

A tragic incident in the Sahara Desert has claimed the lives of at least 49 people in Niger after they became stranded in a remote area without access to water during extreme heat conditions.

According to local authorities, the victims were traveling from neighboring Mali to Niger with their families to celebrate Eid al-Adha when their truck broke down in the middle of the desert. With no immediate assistance available and temperatures soaring, the passengers were left exposed to harsh conditions for an extended period.

Truck breakdown leads to disaster

Officials said the travelers were unable to continue their journey after the vehicle became inoperable in a remote section of the Sahara. As water supplies ran out, many of the passengers reportedly succumbed to dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Preliminary reports indicate that only two people survived the ordeal. The survivors managed to walk a considerable distance to reach the nearest water source and alert local authorities about the emergency.

Rescue operation launched

Following the alert, rescue teams were dispatched to the area. However, by the time help arrived, dozens of people had already died. Authorities later buried the victims in mass graves due to the scale of the tragedy and the difficult conditions in the region.

Harsh realities of desert travel

Government officials expressed condolences to the affected families and pledged continued support. They also highlighted the lack of water facilities and safety infrastructure in many desert regions, which increases the risks faced by travelers.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the deadly consequences of extreme heat and water shortages across Africa’s desert regions, where long-distance journeys can quickly become life-threatening during periods of intense weather.
