WhatsApp to stop working on these Android phones
Meta has announced that WhatsApp will stop working on several older Android smartphones starting September 2026. The move is expected to impact millions of users worldwide, especially those still using devices that are 10 to 11 years old.
According to reports, Android devices running Android 5 or Android 5.1 will no longer support WhatsApp after September 8, 2026. In addition, access restrictions for operating systems older than Android 6 are expected to begin from January 1, 2026, before complete service termination later in the year.

Technology experts explained that WhatsApp regularly upgrades its user interface, privacy protections, and security systems, which require modern operating systems and stronger hardware capabilities. Older Android versions are unable to support many of the latest features introduced by Meta.
Reports also indicate that Meta is increasingly introducing artificial intelligence-powered tools and smart features into WhatsApp, requiring more advanced processing power and updated software support. As a result, outdated smartphones are becoming incompatible with the latest app technologies.
Users still relying on older Android devices have been advised to upgrade their smartphones as soon as possible and transfer their WhatsApp data to a newer device. Experts warn that failing to migrate chats, photos, videos, and backups before the September 2026 deadline could result in permanent data loss.
The latest decision reflects a broader trend among technology companies phasing out support for aging operating systems in order to improve cybersecurity, performance, and AI integration for modern users.
