(Web Desk): WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that will allow messages to automatically disappear after they are read, offering users greater control over their conversations.

According to reports from a recent Android beta version, the platform is introducing an “after reading” timer that updates its existing disappearing messages system. Currently, users can set messages to vanish after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days, with the countdown starting immediately after sending.

The upcoming feature changes this approach by activating the timer only once the recipient opens the message. This means a message will remain visible indefinitely until it is read, making the feature more practical for real-world use.

Early testing suggests that users may be able to choose from multiple deletion intervals after reading, including five minutes, one hour, or up to twelve hours. However, it remains unclear whether these settings will apply to individual chats or be available for all conversations by default.

In addition to the new timer, WhatsApp is also redesigning its interface to make disappearing message options easier to manage. The updated layout separates traditional time-based settings from the new read-based controls, simplifying the user experience.

For example, if a message is set to delete five minutes after being read, it will stay in the chat until opened, then automatically disappear five minutes later.

The feature is still under development and is expected to roll out to beta users first before becoming available globally.
