WhatsApp tests new restricted chat feature
WhatsApp Restricted Chat enters beta testing
The WhatsApp Restricted Chat feature has started reaching a limited number of Android and iOS beta users. The WhatsApp privacy feature was first spotted during development last month as an upgrade to Advanced Chat Privacy.
According to WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp beta update is available to some users running WhatsApp Android beta version 2.26.36.4 and WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.39.10.20.
The WhatsApp privacy feature is designed for conversations where users want stronger controls. However, Restricted Chat is not enabled automatically for existing conversations.
How the new feature works
Users have to switch on the WhatsApp Restricted Chat option manually through the chat information screen. Once activated, WhatsApp shows a message inside the conversation and applies several restrictions.
The WhatsApp beta update limits how users can save, move and access content from a protected conversation. The WhatsApp Android beta version currently being tested includes these new controls.
Under Restricted Chat, users cannot automatically save media from the conversation to their devices. They also cannot export the chat to another location.
The WhatsApp privacy feature also blocks Meta AI tools from being used inside the restricted conversation. This gives users greater control over how their private messages are handled.
Linked devices also blocked
Another important part of the WhatsApp Restricted Chat system is the restriction on linked devices. A protected conversation cannot be accessed through WhatsApp linked devices.
WhatsApp says this control may help prevent unofficial clients or AI agents from accessing a conversation. The WhatsApp Android beta test is therefore adding another layer of control for sensitive chats.
The WhatsApp beta update does not replace the existing security system. Instead, it adds more restrictions around a private conversation.

Encryption remains active
WhatsApp says messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption whether Restricted Chat is enabled or disabled.
The WhatsApp privacy feature works alongside this encryption by limiting how content can be accessed or moved outside the conversation.
Advanced Chat Privacy already provides users with additional controls, and the new Restricted Chat system builds on those privacy measures.
The WhatsApp Restricted Chat option could be useful for people discussing sensitive personal, professional or private matters.
Public release date remains unknown
For now, the feature is available only to selected beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced when the WhatsApp beta update will reach all users.
The WhatsApp Android beta testing period may help the company identify problems and improve the feature before a wider launch.
The WhatsApp privacy feature could also receive changes before its public release. Users who do not have the option yet may have to wait for a future update.
Advanced Chat Privacy and the new restrictions show WhatsApp’s continued focus on giving users more control over private conversations.
