The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has urged citizens to use social media responsibly, calling it a shared national duty that directly impacts social harmony and public trust.
In a recent advisory, the authority asked users to show caution and restraint while posting or sharing content online. It strongly advised against spreading illegal, hateful, defamatory, or false material on digital platforms, warning that such content can cause serious harm.
PTA said the circulation of misleading or malicious narratives against state institutions, the judiciary, or individuals weakens public confidence. It noted that these actions increase polarization, damage reputations, and disrupt social stability at a time when unity is crucial.
The authority emphasized that misuse of social media does not only affect individuals or institutions but also undermines Pakistan’s overall digital ecosystem. According to PTA, unchecked harmful content reduces the credibility of online platforms and discourages constructive digital engagement.
While reaffirming that freedom of expression is a fundamental constitutional right, PTA stressed that this freedom must be exercised within legal and ethical boundaries. Responsible expression, it said, strengthens democracy and supports a healthier online environment.

Referring to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016, the authority reminded users that unlawful online activities are punishable offences. PTA warned that legal action can be taken against those found spreading illegal, hateful, or false content on social media.
The authority concluded by encouraging citizens to verify information before sharing and to use digital platforms positively, saying responsible online behavior is essential for national cohesion and long-term digital growth.
